Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the world. The most common histological subtype is adenocarcinoma. Staging is carried out in accordance with the 8th TNM classification of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC). Today, the main methods used in routine practice by medical specialists are endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and computed tomography (CT). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET-CT) and diagnostic laparoscopy can also be used as alternative methods to clarify the stage of the disease. The planning of the treatment strategy, as well as the oncological prognosis, completely depend on accurate clinical staging before the start of treatment.
